And the Democratic Nominee for the President of the United States of America is Barack Obama.

Or so it seems. I have been wondering to myself, and aloud, to anyone unfortunate enough who will listen to me, " Why would anyone endorse this candidate? " To date, Barack Obama has given not one detail as to how he is going to " Change" Washington. He has not put forth a single comprehensive plan to " Fix" America. I was unaware that we needed so much repair but evidently we do. The throngs of Barack supporters lap up is rhetoric and platitudes like starving Ethiopians devouring a ham sandwich. Unlike the sandwich, that which the supporters receive from Barack, is not very filling or of any substance. Can the American people be so blind? Have we sunk so far into pop culture? You know, the culture that produces such riveting programs like " Jerry Springer", " Big Brother", and oh yes, " American Idol ". Can we not see a demagogue even when they are right in front of us? Is all that is needed to become President of the most powerful Nation on earth is lights, camera, and a catch phrase?

I worry greatly over these simple questions, for if what I am seeing daily, my fears are well founded. Huge numbers of people, take time off from work and family to go and listen and watch this most curious candidate. Yet, if these self same devoted followers look a little closer at their object of affection, I am betting they will see the hollowness that is Barack Obama. Will they make that effort? Will they squint their eyes and see beyond the lights and flash that is this campaign? I doubt it, and that is very frightening to say the least.

How can these people justify casting a vote for someone who has nothing to say? If you vote for someone you should at least know what they are going to try and accomplish. If not, you are wasting your time and endangering the Nation as a whole with your foolish actions. I remember another great speaker who could enthrall thousands with his speaking. He could master the crowds with the intonations of his voice, bringing them to a feverish pitch or subdued calm with the wave of his hand. He was elected by a considerable margin, yet not once did he state clearly his position on policies. Even if he had, I doubt if the mesmerized would have heard him. That Demagogue was Adolf Hitler. Elected by a democratic election on a platform of " Change."

I am not saying that Obama is like Hitler so get your PC sphincters unclenched. What I am pointing out is that electing someone who does not state clearly their intentions is a very dangerous business indeed. Germany in the 1920s and 30s proved that to the world, and is an extreme case. But the point is valid is it not?

I am beginning to believe that our mind numbing pop culture, is eroding the brains of Americans, ( at least Democrats) and that we are becoming a nation of Retards. ( Now get the PC handbook out and give me a shot) The word for Retarded in Irish is Mallintinneach. I say, not only do I deem Obama's campaign, but also any of his enthralled supporters Mallintinneach.

A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff's deputy. He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he is a lawyer from New York and is certain that he has a better education than any cop from Maine.
He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Maine deputy's expense!!
Deputy says," License and registration, please.
"Lawyer says, "What for?"
Deputy says, "You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign."
Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."
Deputy says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and registration, please."
Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"
Deputy says, "The difference is, you have to come to a complete stop,that's the law. License and registration, please!"
Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration and you give me the ticket. If not!, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."
Deputy says, "Sounds fair Exit your vehicle, sir."

At this, the deputy takes out his night stick and starts beating the ever-loving xxxx out of the lawyer and says, "Do you want me to stop, or just slow down?

An Act To Join the Interstate Compact on the National Popular Vote

Hello again, the Maine GOP has just informed me that the following bill (LD 1744) An Act To Join the Interstate Compact on the National Popular Vote is on the table for our Legislators to vote on. The Bill's Summary, like all summaries, make this seem innocuous at best.
Summary
This bill proposes to adopt the interstate compact that is the agreement among the states to elect the President of the United States by national popular vote. Under the compact and the bill, the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia will win the presidency. Under this bill, all of the state's electoral votes would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. This bill would take effect only when enacted by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes, that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President, which is 270 of 538.

Now, I looked at this Bill and have a bit of a problem with it and those who are advocating for it's passage. Fortunately it is the shortest piece of Legislation I have ever read ( 1 page ) so I was able to go over it a couple of times. Allow me to begin my Rant.

The concept of the Electoral College is much decried by many. I too have spoken against it on occasion. To be fair though my disdain for the College has usually come at times when Electors ignore their State's wishes and fail to represent the popular vote of the State. For example; Maine overwhelmingly votes for John McCain in the Presidential election but our Elector's decide to throw their lot in behind Barack instead. I am sure there are safe guards somewhere that discourage such a misuse of power, but lets not be foolish, it happens. That in itself does not mean the Electoral College is all bad.
For the College does one thing for the Maine Voter. One extremely important thing, it gives you a voice. The Voter's from Maine, who are still part of the United States of America, get to be heard through their Electors even if the rest of the Nation disagrees. Under this bill, that voice will be silenced and the whole dynamic of political campaigning will be changed.

The Bill specifically states: The presidential elector certifying official of each member state shall certify the appointment in that official's own state of the elector slate nominated in that state in association with the national popular vote winner.

This actually looks more confusing than it is. What it means is if the National Popular vote goes to a Candidate then the Electors are bound to cast their ballots for that candidate. Right, so the College will effectively become a rubber stamp, bound by the votes of people from other states like California. How is this bad? We are a Nation after all wherein Majority rules. Yes, but the very same Candidates that will be running, will no longer have to pay attention to Small States like Maine and Rhode Island. They will focus their efforts on all of the heavily populated States like New York, Massachusetts, and California. The issues that those voters hold dear will be the issues and concerns for the candidate. Do you as a Maine citizen have the same worries as someone who lives in San Fransisco? maybe on a very basic level, but overall I believe your views will be very different on, let's say, Immigration. Thus your voice is silenced, your opinion voided, your status lowered. No Politician is going to even bat an eyelash at the woes of Maine voters if this passes. Forget about them coming here, or even attempting to help with the major issues that we face like heating Oil prices. So long as they can keep the big States happy they will have no need of us, i.e. you.

What this Bill also says to the Maine Voter is this: " You are too Stupid to chose for yourself so we are going to look elsewhere for our leader." ( pretty harsh huh?) but it is true. The Sponsors and Co-Sponsors of this piece of garbage are screaming that at the top of their lungs. These self same " Representatives" are attempting to undermine your rights and freedoms through Legislation. Elitist, is the nicest term I could come up with for these criminals. They are not stealing money or material items, no, they are stealing your citizenship, your voice. If this passes we might as well pack it in people, for then the Elitists will be right. We, the people of Maine, are too stupid and obtuse, to have a say in the realm of national politics.

Who Is John Frary?

I recieve the Maine GOP news bulletin frequently and was intrigued by a small article that announced John Frary's bid for the Maine 2nd district Congressional seat. I asked myself "who is this John Frary?" and "is he going to be able to beat Michaud for the seat?"

Personally, I have never liked Mike Michaud. I remember distinctly one of his campaign adds many years ago, in which he expouded his " Working Class" background by driving around on a forklift in a factory/warehouse in Lewiston. He had on a nice brand new yellow hard hat and he was smiling talking about his days when he had to eek out a living, and how he understood Mainers and their economic woes. Michaud was going to bring some kind of change in congress that would bring jobs back to Maine Blah, Blah, Blah. What I did notice is that this Staged act was performed inside of a Factory/Warehouse that was out of business, and to the best of my knowledge, still is. This kind of posturing has never appealed to me as it is false. It is an attempt to fool people into voting for you or your party, the sad thing is IT WORKED!

On the upside, I have not had to live in the 2nd District while he has been in Congress, so as I have no vote there, I have dismissed him as the windbag that he is and thought no more of him.

Upon receipt of my GOP news I started to look at this " New" Republican contender and have been smiling with malicious glee ever since. John Frary is just what Congress needs to get moving. In complete contrast to the bland, ineffectual represenative the voters of the 2nd district have now, comes John Frary's Campaign.

John Frary, retired history professor and an editor of the International Military Encyclopedia, was born in Farmington, graduated from Farmington High School and attended the University of Maine in Orono. In 1965 he went to Rutgers University to study Byzantine history, receiving a masters degree and completing the course and examination requirements for his PhD in 1970. During a sabbatical in 1983 he took graduate courses at Princeton University. He worked in administration and later taught history and political science at Middlesex County College from 1972 until his retirement in 2004. He returned to Maine, where he has always had a home, two weeks later.
Frary was the conservative columnist for the Kennebec Journal and Waterville Morning Sentinel from March 2005 until December of that year, when he was dismissed for excessively persistent criticism of Governor Baldacci's Dirigo Health Plan. He has since written columns for the Franklin Journal, Daily Bulldog and Downeast Coastal Press. He has also published guest columns in the Bangor Daily News, Portland Press Herald and Brunswick Times Record.

After reading the views and opinions of Mr. Frary I cannot but help compare him to one of our Nation's founder's, Benjamin Franklin, who I have always held in high regard. Using a combination of wit, and common sense, coupled with a stodginess that defies Political correctness, Mr. Frary puts forth his arguments and ideas in an entertaining, and refreshingly Honest way. Hmm. Commonsense, wit, determination, HONESTY???? When did any of us see that from one of our Congressmen? This campaign admits it's chances are slim in that honesty and " Straight talk" dont win elections, but I feel if enough voters get behind him, he might have a chance. Can you imagine the reaction of someone like Nancy Pelosi to Mr. Frary? That alone makes me want to get him the 2nd district seat.
